New Castle

Six miles south of Wilmington lay the town of New Castle on the banks of the Delaware River.  A port town, founded by Peter Stuyvesant and the Dutch West India Company in 1651, New Castle retains the original character and charm of Colonial America.  The cobblestone streets, churchyards, architecture and gardens are frozen in time and recalls the days of patriots and redcoats.  In 1776 the population of New Castle was just over 3,000 residents, today it is about 4,000.

The New Castle Courthouse is one the town’s dominant features and it was from the top if it spire that a 12-mile arc was drawn that would forever delineate the State of Delaware’s northern most border.

Today New Castle looks as much as it did in the 18th century.  The town was the state’s first capital and has seen the flags of four countries flown over its public green (Sweden, Netherlands, England, and the United States).  New Castle honors its colonial traditions with the annual Day in Old New Castle and the annual Separation Day which celebrates Delaware separation from Pennsylvania.

The downtown district highlights a variety of shopping and dining options plus the New Castle Courthouse Museum, the George Read II House, various properties owned and operate by the New Castle Historical Society, and Battery Park.
