Newark
Newark was founded by Scots-Irish and Welsh settlers in 1694. The town was officially established when it received a charter from George II of Great Britain in April of 1758 permitting the town to hold an annual harvest market and fair. During the Revolutionary War, British and American forces clashed outside Newark at the Battle of Cooch’s Bridge.Legend has it that it was at The Battle of Cooch's Bridge the new Stars and Stripes flag was flown.
Newark is a college town and education has been at its forefront since 1743 when a grammar school, founded by Francis Alison, moved to Newark from nearby from New London, Pennsylvania to Newark in 1765, becoming the Newark Academy. Among the first graduates of the school were three signers of the Declaration of Independence: George Read, Thomas McKean, and James.
The state granted a charter to a new school in 1833, which was called Newark College. Newark Academy and Newark College joined together in the following year, becoming Delaware College. The School closed 1859. In 1870 the school was brought back to life when the Morrill Act allowed a partnership between the State of Delaware and the school's Board of Trustees. In 1913 the state took control from the trustees and assumed sole ownership and later in 1921 renamed the school the University of Delaware.
Newark has also been the home to a variety of manufacturers and mills creating paper, fibers, military tanks, automobiles and more. The town also for a brief time had a thriving canning and shipping business. Newark retains the charm of small town America in its downtown Main Street business district. Accessible and walkable, Main Street is home to shops, restaurants, and community centers. To celebrate various holidays throughout the year Main Street closes to traffic for festivals and parades.
The town is a council-manager city with a variety of departments providing citizen services. The population is just over 30,000 with nearly 9,000 households, about half of which live in the city.
