Newport
Newport, Delaware on the banks of the Christina River was an original colonial
port town. Newport is most famous as the birthplace of American inventor Oliver
Evans. In 1777 Evans produced machinery that automated milling procedures through
the use of conveyor belts, buckets and Archimedean screws. This work quickly improved
the functionality of American mills and would be awarded the third patent ever issued
by the United States Patent Office. Later in his career, Evans would make significant
improvements to the Robert Fulton-invented steam engine. Through Evans’ work, the
steam engine was able to generate a higher pressure rate thus improving effectiveness.
Today Newport is home to just over 2,000 residents and some light manufacturing
facilities along its riverbanks. Newport is administered by a town manager with
a mayor, vice mayor and three commissioners.
Downstream and inland from Newport is Stanton, Delaware. An unincorporated place,
Stanton is noted primarily as the home of Delaware Technical and Community College
as well as Delaware Park Racetrack and Slots.
