Wilmington

Wilmington, Delaware is the First State’s largest city and the home to over 75,000 residents. Wilmington is bisected by Interstate 95 and is a collection of neighborhoods with names like Forty Acres, Little Italy, Trolley Square, The highlands and more. In sum, 40 neighborhoods make up Wilmington. The central business district is dotted with Fortune 500 companies such as DuPont, Bank of America, Barclay, ING and others with Wilmington serving as their corporate headquarters. It is for this reason that Wilmington bills itself the Corporate Capital of the World.

Founded by Swedish colonists in 1638, Wilmington steadily grew as a port and mill town. Nestled between the Christina and Brandywine Rivers the city rolls down from the heights of Union Street to the Delaware River. The Port of Wilmington is a major economic driver with bananas and automobiles the major items to move in and out. The original mills of Wilmington became world famous and in the 19th century Wilmington flour carried worldwide acclaim.

Wilmington’s Christina River manufacturing centered on locomotives and ships with the pre-war and war years seeing the high-watermark. The Wilmington waterfront saw its last manufacturing in the 1960s and in the 1990s saw a rebirth with new development. The renaissance came with the founding of the Wilmington Blue Rocks baseball team (Single A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals) in 1993 and continues today with upscale high rise condominiums and shopping at the nearby Shipyard Shops.

Wilmington has a vibrant cultural scene with a variety of festivals in the spring and summer, most notably the Holy Trinity Greek Festival and the Saint Anthony of Padua Italian Festival. Each spring the streets close for the Caesar Rodney half Marathon and later the Delaware Marathon Running Festival. Each summer Rodney Square in the downtown district hosts the annual Clifford Brown Jazz Festival.

The Brandywine Park is home to a variety of recreational activities and also is home to the Brandywine Zoo. Wilmington’s Market Street is where one can find the Grand Opera House, the DuPont Theater, and the building and museums associated with the Delaware Historical Society.
