Transportation
New Castle County is situated at the mid-point of the New York City – Washington,
D.C./I-95 and Amtrak corridor offering unparalleled access to our nation's centers
of finance and government.
Port of Wilmington
The bustling port of Wilmington, located at the confluence of the Delaware and Christina
rivers, is the nation's leader for imports of fresh fruit, meat, fish and juice
concentrate. As a full-service deepwater port and marine terminal, the facility
handles more than 400 vessels per year and 5 million tons of import/export cargo
annually. With 700,000 square feet of refrigerated warehouse space and another 250,000
square feet for dry cargo, goods passing through the port include automobiles, lumber,
steel, paper and pulp, salt, gypsum, petroleum products, bulk ores and minerals.
Airports
The New Castle County Airport, just 10 minutes from Wilmington, offers worldwide
cargo service. Global passenger service is just 25 minutes away at Philadelphia
International Airport, and the Baltimore-Washington International Airport is about
75 minutes to the south. Amtrak’s popular Metroliner, running between the nation's
capital and New York, stops at the Wilmington station with multiple departures daily.
Wilmington’s station is the ninth busiest passenger rail station in the Northeast
and 11th-busiest in the country. The Delaware Transit Corporation contracts with
the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) to provide commuter
rail service between Delaware and Center City Philadelphia. Cargo rides the rails,
too, with two Class I railroads serving New Castle County.
Highways
New Castle County has a mix of interstate and state roads that keep traffic moving,
keeping the current mean travel time to work in Delaware a mere 24 minutes. Interstate95,
dubbed America’s Main Street, has grown from six to eight lanes, Interstate 495
acts as the bypass around Wilmington, and Interstate 295 connects Delaware and New
Jersey over the Delaware Memorial Bridge.
