Worship

New Castle County is home to people of many faiths and traditions. Religious tolerance and freedom of worship in New Castle County finds its origins in the County's earliest colonial roots when William Penn, a Quaker, established New Castle as Delaware’s colonial capital.

Old Swedes Church in Wilmington, now referred to as Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, was built in 1698 and is said to be the oldest active Protestant church in North America. Today, New Castle County is home to historically significant Protestant and Catholic churches, newly built community churches, synagogues, mosques, a Hindu temple and numerous other places of worship all of which strengthen and enrich the cultural fabric of our county and our region.
