Counselor’s Corner – Sept./Oct. 2003 Mind Stimulators - One Liners
Recent Counselor’s Corners have centered on technology and how the new technology will affect our business lives. This Corner will be a change of pace. We are going to try to stimulate your mind and give you a tool to help you view your problems from a slightly different perspective. The stimulators are one liners. The author will share a few of his favorites with the reader. The challenge to the reader is to scan the list and see how many smiles and new thoughts pop up. Here are a few of the author’s favorites along with a brief comment:
“The price of progress may be trouble.” Don’t dwell on the troubles.
“Often the good is an enemy of the best.” If you are good and know it, complacency can get in the way of you being the best. “If you find yourself in a fair fight, your preparation was inadequate.” Abraham Lincoln was a great proponent of knowing the opponent’s position better than the opponent did. He called it his unfair advantage. “There is no future in saying it can’t be done.” A negative approach never gets anything done. Try again with a new angle. “Progress rarely comes in straight lines.” A little consolation when things are not going right. Keep trying. “If you want to enjoy the rainbow, be prepared to endure some rain.” Reaching the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow might require getting wet. “Look through the right end of the telescope.” Keep a proper perspective in facing your problems. “Success is not an endpoint. It is a journey with plenty of detours.” This is just plain old common sense to go with your perspective. “Whether you think you can do a thing or not do it, you are right.” Your accomplishments will be a measure of your attitude. “It is never too late to become the person you ought to be.” This one always hits me right between the eyes. Get moving. “Why
not go out on a limb? After all, that is where the fruit is.”
“Failure is not an option.” If one door closes, new doors will open.
Well, did you find a nugget or two that stimulated your thought pattern? Did you make a resolve or two along the way to try a new approach to one of your problems? There is no lack of opportunities in your future. This leads to a final one liner: “Mother Nature provides the birds with plenty of seeds and bugs, but does not deliver them to the nest.”
